Got A Problem With Your Submersible Pump?

One of the most common problems- When your submersible pump isn't starting!

Possible Reason One- It is possible that power is not being supplied to the submersible pump.

Check- Try placing a voltmeter across the power lines that are coming into the submersible pump. In this way, you will be able to check the power supply for the overload protection box.

Correct- If you find that there is no power to the box, then the power company should be consulted.

Possible Reason Two- It is possible that there is no overload protection.

Check- Try examining the circuit breaker as well as the fuses to the submersible pump for ensuring that they are being operated correctly.

Correct- If you find that the breaker has been tripped, then replace the blown fuses and reset it.

Possible Reason Three- It is possible that the pressure switch on the submersible pump is damaged.

Check- Try checking the voltage across the switch, keeping in mind that the submersible pump pressure switch is in a closed position. If you find that the voltage drop is at the same level as compared to the line voltage, then it is obvious that the switch isn’t making contact.

Correct- In such a case, the contact points should be cleaned. Also, the pressure switch should be replaced for the given submersible pump. 

Just like this, there are more problems that a submersible pump faces. Sometimes, a submersible pump will not stop running, sometimes it starts up too much, and sometimes it works but would deliver little or no water.

Whether it is about raw water pumps or any other pump, one can only be confident about operating them when he or she knows the basic facts about water pumps. Water pumps don’t suck fluids:
In the world of pumps, this is a very common misunderstanding. People need to realize that there is some energy source other than the water pump itself, that should supply the energy that is required for the fluid to get to the water pump. This is simply because water pumps do not suck fluids. In normal cases, these sources can be atmospheric pressure and/or gravity. In the end, one needs to remember that the fluids don’t have tensile strength. This is the reason why water pumps do not have the capability of reaching out and pulling fluid into the suction.

The realistic suction lift is around 26 feet (maximum):
It’s already been stated in the previous fact, water pumps do not suck fluids. Now, if you’re at sea level, then the atmospheric pressure would be 14.7 pound per square inch absolute (psia).  This simply translates (multiply by 2.31) into around 33.9 feet of absolute head. One might have been able to lift cold water 33 feet if there was no vapor pressure or fluid friction working against the entire system. Unfortunately, in reality, the fluid friction, as well as the negative consequences of vapor pressure, would end up working against you and precluding the fluid lifts of much more than 26 feet.

Almost all of the pump’s problems take place on the suction side:
Unfortunately, there is another very common as well as a pervasive misunderstanding about the working of water pumps. When you imagine any pump system acting as three separate systems, you’ll be able to understand better. Now, imagine them troubleshooting issues out in the field. The pump, the suction system, as well as the system downstream of the pump all working together. Studies show that around 85 percent of the pump issues always occur on the suction side of the pump. Therefore, whenever you are in doubt, its always a great idea to start looking at the suction side for the solution.
