Basic Pump Facts That One Should Know

Whether it is about raw water pumps or any other pump, one can only be confident about operating them when he or she knows the basic facts about water pumps. Therefore, it is always a better idea to at least skim through these basic facts. For the convenience of those curious ones out there, we have curated a list of such facts in this blog.
  raw water pumps

Please have a look at the following:

Water pumps don’t suck fluids:
In the world of pumps, this is a very common misunderstanding. People need to realize that there is some energy source other than the water pump itself, that should supply the energy that is required for the fluid to get to the water pump. This is simply because water pumps do not suck fluids. In normal cases, these sources can be atmospheric pressure and/or gravity. In the end, one needs to remember that the fluids don’t have tensile strength. This is the reason why water pumps do not have the capability of reaching out and pulling fluid into the suction.

The realistic suction lift is around 26 feet (maximum):
It’s already been stated in the previous fact, water pumps do not suck fluids. Now, if you’re at sea level, then the atmospheric pressure would be 14.7 pound per square inch absolute (psia).  This simply translates (multiply by 2.31) into around 33.9 feet of absolute head. One might have been able to lift cold water 33 feet if there was no vapor pressure or fluid friction working against the entire system. Unfortunately, in reality, the fluid friction, as well as the negative consequences of vapor pressure, would end up working against you and precluding the fluid lifts of much more than 26 feet.

Almost all of the pump’s problems take place on the suction side:
Unfortunately, there is another very common as well as a pervasive misunderstanding about the working of water pumps. When you imagine any pump system acting as three separate systems, you’ll be able to understand better. Now, imagine them troubleshooting issues out in the field. The pump, the suction system, as well as the system downstream of the pump all working together. Studies show that around 85 percent of the pump issues always occur on the suction side of the pump. Therefore, whenever you are in doubt, its always a great idea to start looking at the suction side for the solution.

Here’s what you didn’t know about the Dewatering Process!

The dewatering pumps are used for various purposes. Therefore, it is important to know as much as you can about the dewatering process. This is why this blog is going to tell you a few interesting facts, that you probably didn’t know already.

Dewatering PumpsHere goes:

1.Excess water acts as a problem in and out of the site

Firstly, one should know and believe that the dewatering process is quite simple. It is as simple as work being done, water being accumulated, and further, water being extracted. However, there is something that does make the practice complicated. This is what comes right after the step of extraction. Most of the companies out there face issues related to where the water acquired is to be dumped. This has become a very common issue with all such companies that are using water pumps. This is because the pipes directly go for directing the water into an underground system. Now, the issue is that if it’s placed at a place which is somewhere nearby, then it causes the soil to erode. This could easily affect the construction at a point later on.

Therefore, the common practice is to first test out the dewatering plan and then see the effects of the water on the release area.

2.The techniques of dewatering are quite simple

We all know that dewatering is just taking away water and further moving it to some other place. However, there are different techniques that various companies are trying to use for the same. Out of all of them, the most common one is by the use of pumps like dewatering pumps. Some go on creating deep wells as well as drains for keeping the water level to the minimum. On the other hand, some companies are using siphoning techniques. The simplest dewatering way is by scooping out the water with the help of heavy machinery. It is then placed in a container, further transported to the area that it is going to be directed to. This works best when the water levels are still low.

There are many other interesting facts about dewatering pumps and its techniques, that you can find out by digging deeper. You would go on to find that it is a long process which takes months or weeks to complete. Also, that dewatering is important for quick as well as safe completion of projects that are large-scale.

Talking About Ash Slurry!

As long-time manufacturers of slurry pumps, Darling Pumps realizes that the topic of ash slurry is a little complex. However, whether we talk about slurry pumps, or submersible dewatering pumps or any water pumps for that matter, no function of them is impossible to understand.

Therefore, in an attempt to help the people who are feeling a little lost when it comes to the subject of ash slurry, this blog explains a little about the same.

Slurry Pumps, Dewatering Pumps
For starters, you should understand that in thermal plants, coal is used as fuel in order to generate electricity. Burning of coal leads to the generation of ash. This generated ash needs to be carefully disposed off from the thermal power plant.

Following are the types of ash generated in a thermal power plant:

1. Fly Ash- Out of the total of ash generated in thermal power plants, around 80% is fly ash. This ash is in the form of really fine particles.

2. Bottom Ash- This refers to the ash that is being generated below the furnace of the thermal power plant. The bottom ash is about 20% of the total ash generated. Due to its coarse nature, bottom ash needs to be further crushed before it can go into the ash handling system.

If you lost us at ‘the ash handling system’ then don’t worry, here’s a little bit which explains to you, what that refers to.

The ash handling system is also known as the ash handling plant. This is used in thermal power plants to cool down the generated ash and bring it down to a manageable temperature.  Further, it is transferred to a storage facility or a disposal area and used in other industries.

The ash from the bottom ash handling system, when mixed with water in bottom ash silo, forms slurry. This new formed slurry is then transported to ash disposal area. From here the slurry is further pump out through slurry handling pump.

Although in doing this slurry pumps suffer through a lot of wear and tear. This wear and tear lead to its own set of problems, like the following:

1. Increase in maintenance and repair costs
2. Improper quality of pumping
3. Replacement costs
4. More time to get the job done right

Therefore, one should always focus on getting the right kind of slurry pumps, when it comes to dealing with something as complex as ash slurry.

Understanding the importance of water pump safety

Whether you are using sea water pumps, or any other kind of pump, it’s important to remember to take out the extra amount of time for learning about the pump safety. When it comes to submersible water pumps, they do not really seem dangerous. However, if they aren’t fitted & operated properly they can cause personal injury, which at times can be fatal.

Therefore, this blog is devoted towards sharing a few tips on water pump safety. Although, this blog does not include every tip there is to know, but it is intended for reminding you of some of the basic ones.
sea water pumps, dewatering pumps, submersible pumps
Have a look at the following:

1. Owner’s manual

It does not matter whether its seawater pumps, or dewatering pumps, or which brand’s pump you have decided to purchase. Every company out there, has the information on how to operate their own manufactured pumps, that too with the highest level of safety possible. Although you may think that the safety fundamentals are always the same, and it is true, the specifics of it, often differ. This is where it depends on which brand as well as what type of pump you are getting installed. Therefore, you should make sure that you read the owner’s manual provided with the pump & comply with the procedures laid down therein.

2. Safety guards

When you are dealing with water pumps, it is highly crucial to always make sure, that all the safety guards both mechanical as well as electrical, are in place while the pump is being operated. Not only should you make this sure with the safety guards, but also with the shields of the water pump being operated.

3. Control device

All pump manufacturer will advise you to install safety device like control panel along with its pumps. Many a times this suggestion is treated as an optional thing. However, it is advisable not treat this as an option, but to look at it as necessity, as it will help you in long run if there is any malfunction with the pump. Many reputed manufacturers have features which gives you inbuilt protection against Overheating, Mechanical Jamming, Dry running etc, when connected to control panel.

Apart from these three basic tips, there are a few others, that teach to never use a water pump for fluids that it wasn’t designed for, to always keep the pump at least 3 feet away from the walls and other equipment during its operation, to never use a pump in an explosive or flammable surrounding etc.

All in all, beware of the pumping accidents, and stay safe by applying these basic safety tips. For reliable dewatering submersible pumps and other submersible pumps in India, call 9981992833.

Why the Need of Submersible Dewatering Pumps?

In this real world of competitiveness, time has truly taken over the value of money. Therefore, in these days, the construction sites have no time for any kind delays due to unwanted water. This fact paws way for the manufacturer who has high reliability quotient to this & has complete pumping solutions in his range.
Submersible Dewatering Pumps
This brings us to submersible dewatering pumps. A manufacturer who provides a great range of such pumps would know to make them for pumping out water in large volumes, regular dewatering, pumping out industrial waters, heavy duty pumping dewatering etc.

The high head submersible pumps are very critical for every Micro tunneling projects, Water supply projects, Underground pits, Big construction sites as well for mining sites. They can be used for pumping dirty water as well as for pumping this dirty / abrasive water to greater & higher distances.  Additionally, they come in very handy when the drainage needs to be done at narrow spaces. Being portable they can be moved to various locations as well.

This tells us that whether someone works in mining, construction, or tunneling the high head submersible pumps become their best insurance against any kind of water related downtime that they might face.

If you go for a reliable manufacturer, who promises to provide good quality water pumps, then they you can opt for some unique add-ons like pumps suitable to pump out hot temperature liquids as well as saline water.

Thus, the need of submersible dewatering pumps comes on various occasion. Apart from the wide range of applications that it serves, it also assists otherwise. For example, the don’t really require spending too much of energy in moving water into the pump. This is why they are said to be pretty efficient. In the process, the water pressure’s role is to push the water into a submersible pump. This is how it saves a lot of the water pump’s energy. In fact, it is seen that some submersible pumps are able to easily handle solids up to size of 25 mm as well. However, some are better for only liquids. These water pumps are quiet as well as smooth in executing their functions.

Therefore, the need of submersible dewatering pumps, becomes inevitable to people at work sites. However, one must always remember that the product quality plays a big role in the whole process!

Desalination - Understanding the Concept

Being a leading Indian manufacturer of submersible pumps, Darling Pumps has been the Chief architect of submersible pump revolution in India. Our new & innovative product line has set a benchmark for other to follow and has thus always kept us one step ahead of the market. We offer a wide range of sewage, slurry and dewatering submersible pumps in India and countries abroad. To add to our innovative product line, we have introduced pumps for desalination. A unique concept, desalination is getting a lot of attention these days.
In this blog, we will be discussing about the process of desalination. Moreover, we will also be discussing the various methods that one can use to execute the process of desalination. For starters let’s take a look at what the whole process of desalination is all about.

The Process of Desalination
The process of desalination is used in order to extract mineral components from saline water. Put in simple words, desalination means the removal of  minerals and salts from a target substance.
When water is to be produced for human consumption or irrigation then the saltwater is desalinated for the same. Salt is one of the by-products of desalination. When we talk about the modern interest in the process of desalination, it is majorly focused on a cost-effective way to provide fresh water for the use of humans. The process of desalination is also used on many submarines as well as seagoing ships. It becomes one of the few rainfall-independent water sources.

desalination pumps India | submersible pumps India | dewatering pumps India

The water obtained after the process of desalination is generally more healthy than the water that is obtained from groundwater and rivers. Moreover, it is found that there is much less salt as well as limescale in the desalinated water.
There are various methods attached to the execution of the process of desalination. Each method has its own advantages as well as disadvantages. Let’s have a look at the list of these methods -
  • Vacuum distillation
  • Multi-stage flash distillation
  • Multiple effect distillation
  • Vapor-compression distillation
  • Reverse osmosis
  • Freeze-thaw
  • Solar evaporation
  • Electrodialysis reversal
  • Membrane distillation
  • Wave-powered desalination
Every seawater desalination method consumes different amounts of energy. This includes thermal energy as well as electrical energy.
When we think about the costs that go in while executing the process of desalination, there are various factors that decide this. A few of these factors include the type of facility, capacity, feed water, and location. On top of these factors some other are energy, financing, labor, as well as concentrate disposal.
Another challenging factor in desalination is pumping process. Not all pumps & metals which are available in market can work in sea water. Darling Pumps over the years have successfully supplied pumps for many sea water related applications & pumping. The metal used here is exclusive & very reliable.
Just for your information, for desalination, type of pumps is less relevant compared to the MOC & its reliability. Darling Pumps is proud to offer pumps for desalination. We  have offered pumps for Sea water in Duplex or SS316L series. For more information on desalination, get in touch with us at +91 99819 92833.

Tips to Save Energy on Pumping System

As renowned drainage submersible pump suppliers and providers of dewatering submersible pumps in India, in the first part of this blog, we managed to share with you 3 great tips on saving energy on your pumping system.

drainage submersible pump suppliers | dewatering submersible pumps

Taking the same discussion further, here are 4 more tips to save energy on pumping system -

1. Minimizing the system pressure drop

When you think about minimizing the system pressure drop, the best way to do so is through pipe-sizing optimization. The hydraulic friction loss would create a decrease in pressure from one end of a straight pipe to the other end of the pipe. The factors that influence the system pressure drop are pipe size (diameter), flow rate, pipe characteristics (material, surface roughness, etc.), properties of the fluid being pumped and overall pipe length.

2. Implementing proper control valves

The control valves are used in controlling pressure and/or flow. They can assist in reducing energy losses over non-controlled systems like multiple locations with different elevations and distances as well as irrigation systems that have a fixed-speed pump. However, The main functions of control valves are bypassing flow or throttling flow. The throttling process decreases the flow. On the other hand the process increases the pressure. Minimizing excess pressure is possible by bypassing excess flow back to another location or the reservoir.

3. Implementing (VSDs) variable speed drives

The drivers are used for variable-speed operation or fixed-speed. Energy can be saved for many applications simply by implementing variable speed drives. With the help of a variable speed drive, the rotational speed of the pump can be adjusted. This helps in achieving the appropriate head and flow that is required for the process. A variable speed drive often gets added to an existing pump motor system. This helps in slowing down the pump to fulfill actual requirements as compared to the theoretical requirements that come out at the beginning.  When a VSD is finally installed, it can accommodate changing system demands, that include a lot of potential future expansion plans. This proves to be a great method as it results in the lowest life cycle costs and the highest energy efficiency.

4. Eliminating unnecessary uses

Do not overlook this simple method of saving energy by eliminating all the unnecessary use. Such measures include using pressure switches to control the number of pumps in service as well as shutting down any unnecessary pump.
