Talking About Ash Slurry!

Therefore, in an attempt to help the people who are feeling a little lost when it comes to the subject of ash slurry, this blog explains a little about the same.

For starters, you should understand that in thermal plants, coal is used as fuel in order to generate electricity. Burning of coal leads to the generation of ash. This generated ash needs to be carefully disposed off from the thermal power plant.

Following are the types of ash generated in a thermal power plant:

1. Fly Ash- Out of the total of ash generated in thermal power plants, around 80% is fly ash. This ash is in the form of really fine particles. 

2. Bottom Ash- This refers to the ash that is being generated below the furnace of the thermal power plant. The bottom ash is about 20% of the total ash generated. Due to its coarse nature, bottom ash needs to be further crushed before it can go into the ash handling system.

The ash handling system is also known as the ash handling plant. This is used in thermal power plants to cool down the generated ash and bring it down to a manageable temperature.  Further, it is transferred to a storage facility or a disposal area and used in other industries.

The ash from the bottom ash handling system, when mixed with water in bottom ash silo, forms slurry. This new formed slurry is then transported to ash disposal area. From here the slurry is further pump out through slurry handling pump.

Although in doing this slurry pumps suffer through a lot of wear and tear. This wear and tear lead to its own set of problems, like the following:

Why is your submersible pump failing?

1. Ignorance and wrong selection of the submersible pumps

This causes it to fail.

3. Reverse rotation 

This failure is caused when a submersible pump is wired incorrectly. This means that the motor would run backwards. In case this happens, a very less amount of water gets pumped. Moreover, this seriously damages the pump. It also polishes the impeller which further leads to cavitation.

4. Cable Damage

This is another common reason for submersible pump failure. More often than not, cable is most ignored part of the pump. Mishandling of pump can cause internal or external damage to cable. If the cable has been yanked or gashed, then it should immediately be checked. One should always ensure that there is no undue stress on cable during it handling or fitment. The seal arrangement where the cable is entering the pump’s body, is a weak spot, even just a few drops of moisture can successfully lead to the pump’s failure.

1.What do you mean by an open centrifugal pump?

2. Why is my pump making noises?

Mostly water pumps are fairly quiet while in operation, However, at times pumps may make noise due lose & faulty installations, improper pipe fittings or noise may even come from hydraulic portion of pump. Therefore, always ensure weather the noise is coming from the pump. If the pump makes a popping, growling, squealing, or grinding noise, then you should immediately get it attended by trained service technician who may have to disassemble it and inspect for damage. 

3. Why did my pump’s shaft break?

The shaft failures could be because of many factors. These include:
  • Sudden & frequent starting or stopping the pump.
  • When engaged suddenly, a water pump may twist the impeller off the shaft. This can end up damaging the shaft & bearings.
  • Water hammer that is caused by a sudden shut off of water flow causes the impeller to break the pump shaft. Over time, it also damages the shaft bearings. It always advisable to have NRV fitted to pipeline.
  • A damaged or unbalanced impeller may cause shaft failure as well as bearing damage.
4. When should the gaskets of the water pumps be replaced?

Whenever the water pump is partially or fully opened for servicing or for any other reason. Also if Gaskets are found to be damaged or cut they should be replaced. They are inexpensive, and a faulty gasket causes the water pump to leak.

Generally, the larger the motor, the less cycles each day are recommended and the longer becomes the run time that is needed. Usually, the owner’s manual indicates the max number of cycles in a period of 24 hours. Taking this into account, with the flow rate, would help in determining what would be right for you. With higher flow rates, the basin’s diameter needed increases.
